I'm home!

I was excited until I realized I was standing in goose poop.  Photo by MC3 Siniff.
Well, at least for the time being.  I've just arrived at Naval Station Everett, where Nimitz will be homeported after her dry dock ends.  I'm really happy to have a barracks room, but the sea calls, so I won't be in it much.  The ship won't be here for a bit longer, but I needed check into the room ahead of time.

Sunset in Everett.  Photo by me.

Like Bremerton, this base has a great view of the water.  You can get closer to it here, though.

SURVIVAL TIP:  If a scene like this presents itself, slow down and absorb it.  It'll help balance the hectic moments that fill your days as an MC.

I'm home!

Well, at least for the time being.  I've just arrived at Naval Station Everett where Nimitz will be homeported.  I'm pretty excited to have a barracks room, but I won't be spending much time in it as I'll be out to sea most of the time. The ship won't get here for a while... I drove up yesterday to get some things situated.

Movie theater

Part of an MCs job underway is to run movies on SITE TV.  It's a big morale boost, as catching a flick after work is the only form of entertainment for most Sailors.

MC3 Berumen is labeling roughly 800 8mm movies in preparation of airing them during our first cruise.  Every month we receive new tapes, and send back old ones.

Flag Handling 101

I'm walking through the hangar bay and see this group getting a lesson in how to fold our National Ensign.

There's a specific way to do it and it's definitely a good skill to know.

That's all I have...

FRONT LINE: Combat Camera in Afghanistan

Afghan National Army commandos patrol towards their objective during an operation to disrupt a known Taliban supply line in Saydabad district, Wardak province, Afghanistan, Feb. 7. A buddy of mine, MC3 Sebastian McCormack, is serving a tour with Combat Camera.  He's working with Afghan commandos, documenting all the hard work going on over there.  He took a few minutes to write me as much as he can about his experiences there so far.

McCormack's in exceptional physical condition.  I remember getting into his car one day, and he had some kind of weight vest sitting in the back seat.

"Hey man, what's this for?"
"I run with that on."
"Oh. Thanks for making me feel really out of shape today."

----------------------------------

Hey Brooks,

My primary mission in Afghanistan is to capture imagery of our partner force in action and tell their story.

The weather has been somewhat of a challenge thus far. The winter has been abnormally cold and snowy. The terrain is very rugged. It's definitely a physical job.

Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Sebastian McCormack practices locking-out his rappelling rope as part of a tactical rappelling course during Fleet Combat Camera Group Pacific’s Summer Quick Shot 2011 field training exercise. Quick Shot is a semi-annual field exercise designed to train combat camera personnel to operate in a combat environment. As COMCAM, it's important to take all pre-deployment training seriously and gain experience by taking advantage of all job opportunities. You've got to be well rounded and proficient in all areas. Most importantly, it's imperative to know your role within any group you're attached to. Be professional and learn from other people!

Thanks for checking in Mac, I have no doubt my readers will love this.  Take care of yourself out there.

Planking?

IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. Random PT.

It's rarely our choice, but surprisingly, physical training in the middle of a
work day is actually a morale lifter. A group of us were in the TV studio
and some crazy young punk started bragging that he would destroy anyone in a
planking competition.

The aspiring badass forgot Master Chief was in the room.
